Digital Artistry Questions

OK, one of the media I work in is Digitally based. I take a blank screen and using set of programs create a scene. (that sounds socially inept) Anyway, I do this not by manipulating a photo, but really with a blank canvas as it were.
When I use pigments in an oil-based fluid on a ground with a brush or palette knife, I am a painter or an oil painter; I work in oils, my medium is oil paint.
When I use a computer to manipulate electrons to stimulate photon emission from a computer screen or to deposit pigments/toner/inks on a ground... Well, yes I am a digital artist, but not a photographer, or graphic designer or variant. What medium am I using? What am I working in? Computer artist or Digital artist is good as the generic, just as painter is, but where do we go from there? Is my medium electrons?

This is becoming a concern for me because people keep asking the same dang question, or variation: "Wow, what does the original photo look like and where did you take it?" I am tired of it.
In the same way as an oil painter I respect and admire acrylic painters, I respect and admire people who digitally work with photos. It is hard creative work that can yield beautifully expressive and impressive results. Experience taught me that, but it is not my medium.

Any ideas for what to call our medium? How to refer to ourselves other than whiney?

Are there other digital artists out there who are tired of being labelled as photographers or "other"? I DO NOT use photographs in my work, nor is it other. It is digital. I cycle electrons using a program to produce photons bouncing at your eyeballs. I do not point and click a shutterbutton; please note, I am NOT putting down artists who digitize and re-work photos, that is hard work and needs talent to do well (as does any form of expression/art). I was emailed recently by someone who was wondering where I got the base photos for my work and did not believe me when I told them there were none. *sigh* I am also an oil painter who paints straight from the brain/soulthingy, does that invalidate my work because I did not use a "real" object to paint from?

I need a male for a project I am working on.
I have a poem at http://fronscex.wordpress.com titled "Screaming at a lemon" that I am embedding into one of my digital works - no, I'm not telling which one. I can also email the poem to you. There will be four, maybe five, voices involved, two female, two male; the fifth may be computer-generated. I will take the audio files and weave them together, then embed it/them.
The poem will then be accessed one of four ways; two audio, two visual. Audio#1: audio will play straight through while piece is being viewed. Audio #2: parts of the audio will play as 'sweet spots' in the piece are moused over. Visual #1: poem will display with transcription of the voices involving differences in font, color, texture. Visual #2: parts of the poem will display as the 'sweet spots' are moused over.

None of the performers will know who the others are until the project is ready to go public.

For the visual end of it I will work with the performers to maximize the visual impact and help preserve the performers' emotive intent.

If this works out and actually goes public, you will of course be fully credited for your creativity and work.

Looking to commission a large metal wall sculpture

ArtFinders has a client that is interested in a large metal wall sculpture with curvilinear forms. Think Frank Gehry architecture as far as the look they want. It needs to be anywhere from 8 to 10 feet in the vertical dimension and 4 to 5 feet horizontal. We'd like something modular in three or so pieces that we can assemble easily on site. Please include approximate weight in proposal.

Hello there,

I'm new to the site and would like to try and be a little bit active on the forums, both to collaborate as well as to get my art out there.

I'd like to start a discussion on what everyone's favorite style is (their medium, tools, etc..), how often you create your art and what your favorite art is.

Personally my all time favorite is using the Pilot V7 liquid ink pen and plain ol' computer paper. Depending on the detail I want I will often switch to Staedtler pigment liner pens going between 0.1 to 0.7mm sizes. Other than that my favorite used to be only pencil until I started to get more into contrast black and white drawings.

My dedication is really sporadic, I only ever draw if I'm really feeling into it and can put the time in. If I'm not feeling completely into it I'll create terrible messes. I'll draw for maybe about an hour and come back to a piece then stop if I feel like I can't contribute to what I've made. I never start with something complete in mind and just go with the flow of the pen, never knowing how it will turn out.

The most intriguing art to me is graffiti (non-senseless kind). I have much respect for those artists and am always amazed at some of the things they pull off.

Anyways, hopefully this thread can get a good discussion on and help other new artists to the site get noticed.

Adolphe Willette

I own a piece by Adolphe Willette, France, 1857-1926.
It is titled "Rotkappchen", (Little Red Riding Hood).
This painting is 10.5x6 inches.
It was purchased in Germany in early 1900s.
I can find no reference to this piece, any information would be greatly appreciated.
